When Wildfires Strike, So Do Scammers: How to Spot a Charity Scam

When a major tragedy strikes, like the devastating wildfires happening right now in California, most of us feel driven to help in any way we can. Unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions. Some scammers see these events as an opportunity to exploit your kindness.

Before donating to any relief effort, watch out for these 4 Red Flags:

 

1. High-Pressure Tactics and Emotional Manipulation

What to Look For: Statements that create a sense of urgency to donate like “We need help within the next hour to save lives!” or “Every second counts, don’t wait!” are classic scare tactics. They push you to act immediately, making it difficult to do your homework.

PRO TIP: Take your time before donating. Do your research. If you feel a sense of urgency, slow down. Legitimate charities won’t pressure you to donate immediately or ask for sensitive information over the phone or email.

 

2. Lack of Transparency About How Donations Will Be Used

What to Look For: Vague or non-existent information on how exactly donations will be spent. Credible charities provide clear details or financial breakdowns, so you know how funds are allocated. Scammers, on the other hand, rely on vague descriptions and fail to offer concrete details.

PRO TIP: If you’re donating through crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe, look for campaigns with transparent plans and verifiable info. Be mindful that scammers can still slip through, so if details are murky, steer clear!

 

3. Unsolicited Contact and Requests for Personal Information

What to Look For: Unexpected calls, emails, or texts urging you to donate immediately, often accompanied by strong emotional appeals, can be a major red flag. Also, legitimate charities generally won’t ask for personal data or financial information over unsecure channels.

PRO TIP: Never give out sensitive information in response to a random email or phone call. If you want to help, do your own research and contribute through a charity’s official website or a trusted donation portal.

 

4. Charities with No Track Record

What to Look For: A barely-there online presence, or a freshly created social media page. Reputable charities usually have an established history you can verify online or through reputable databases.

PRO TIP: Try searching the charity’s name with words like “reviews,” “fraud,” or “scam.” If you can’t find a solid background or you see consistent red flags, donate elsewhere!

 

Extra Tips to Stay Safe:
  • Don’t Click on Random Links: If you’re prompted to donate via a link in an email, text, or social media message, go directly to the organization’s official site instead.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect you’ve encountered a scam, notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
  • Alert Your Community: Share what you learn with friends and family to help protect them, too.
